Typing is a crucial skill that required for most people, like how most people need to know how to drive a car or tie their shoelaces.
If you cannot type, you cannot interface with a computer effectively. If you cannot type properly, every task using a computer will be dramatically slowed, reducing the time you have to pursue meaningful objectives.
Thankfully, there are numerous resources to learn how to type for free–including games–at any age.
Typing is a mechanical skill, so it is best learned by doing it, as opposed to watching YouTube videos teaching you how to type without actually typing.
However, a basic video showing the fundamentals of typing like where to place your fingers is valuable before you begin a typing practice; many training tools will already do this though. Most keyboards have a raised notch on the letter ‘f’ & ‘j’ so you know where to rest your index fingers.
Typing of the dead
Typing of The Dead is an old action/education game released in 1999. The game mimics arcade games with light guns where you shoot at targets on the screen. In typing of the dead, you ‘type’ zombies to death instead of shooting them.
Typing of The Dead was initially an arcade game, with keyboards, which back in 99’ was a genius way to encourage kids to learn how to type.
Today you, or your children, can be tricked into learning how to type by attempting to beat the game across six unique chapters.
Typing of The Dead is what’s called “abandonware”, meaning that the creators of the game have essentially abandoned it, so you can download it for free from Myabandonware.
You, your children, your friends, or anyone you know with a computer can learn how to type while killing zombies for free.
Getting an “abandoned game” to work can sometimes be difficult, but not always, as these games are no longer supported by anyone.
it may be better to buy the managed version of Typing of The Dead if resources allow, but you have to make that decision for yourself.
Typing of The Dead: Overkill
For those who can pay, Typing of The Dead: Overkill is the sold-on-Steam version of Typing of The Dead, so it should work for most people. Unfortunately, it will not run on Mac.
Typing of The Dead: Overkill has nine story missions, three more than the abandoned Typing of The Dead. It also contains mini-games and a hardcore mode.
The theme of the game is like a “B-movie” zombie grindhouse thriller, so think action movie with blood that comes from zombies.
Typing of The Dead: Overkill costs $19.99 at the time of this writing, or $25 for all DLC which we believe is worth it for this educational game. According to Steam Database, which tracks the prices of Steam games, this game has not gone on sale since 2017, so it’s unlikely to do so in the future.
Keep in mind that this game does have violence, so it may not be best for young children if you are not a cool parent.
Educational abandonware games
Myabandonware has an entire category dedicated to education games, and over 31,000 games in general. You may find more free, abandoned educational games that can be valuable and run on your device with little to no effort.
The games will tell you if they also function via Apple; however, they may not function on a high-end Macbook Pro, as some games list being compatible with the Apple 2.
Most popular Myabandonware Educational games:
- Oregon Trail Deluxe
- Mario Teaches Typing (another free typing game!)
- The Oregon Trail
- Oregon Trail II
- Super Solvers: Gizmos & Gadgets!
- M*A*T*H*S Circus
- Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? (Enhanced)

If you don’t know how to type properly, consider learning through Typing of The Dead for free. Typing games may be the most fun way to learn how to type properly.
