The course was professionally shot and executed. Masterclass’ library of courses are all produced by them. There aren’t as many courses as Lynda or Udemy, but every instructor is a true master of their craft.
I didn’t learn any hard skills from the Neil Giaman course. Instead, I learned how Gaiman thinks about writing which is more valuable than a course on writing.
Each class lesson has a companion worksheet. The worksheets are an extension to the class and include assignments related to what you watched. The worksheets represent the same quality that Masterclass puts in their videos.
The cost of Masterclass
I originally planned to purchase the Neil Gaiman class alone. The price for the 19-lesson course is $90 and includes each lesson worksheet.
After I looked at the course library, I opted for the Masterclass annual plan for $180; the price of two individual courses. It was worth it.
So far, the only class I’ve finished is Neil Gaimen’s course on writing. I’ve added others to my list including a course by David Lynch, teaching film making; and another course by Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian to walk in space, teaching space exploration.
The amount of content contained within Masterclass is like one of those tiny cars with fifteen full-sized clowns inside. Even more so when you realize the cost for a full year of unlimited access is $150.
Some of the instructors include:
- Howard Schulz | Founder of Starbucks
- Steve Martin | The amazing comedian
- Natalie Portman | Actress
- Gordon Ramsey | The always zen king of cooking
- Serena Williams | Tennis queen
- Annie Leibovitz | Reknown Photographer
- Steph Curry | Basketball legend
- Samuel L. Jackson | The actor
Masterclass is different
What makes Masterclass different is the masters who teach.
Education sites like Udemy have many courses that going on sale often, but there isn’t a curation process to make sure the person who is teaching is a true master. Or a process to determine if the quality of the content is acceptable.
Every instructor on Masterclass is an expert in their field and many of the fields taught on Masterclass cannot be taught anywhere else.
You won’t see a space exploration class on Udemy, and you won’t get Howard Schulz, founder of Starbucks, teaching a class on business anywhere else.
What makes Masterclass so great is the instructors. Who, are not only masters in their crafts, but passionate about their trades. Each lesson is informative and interesting like a documentary that makes you smarter.
Masterclass is a better choice
Instead of watching re-runs of The Office or Friends on Netflix, you can watch educational, entertaining, content that will make you a better, more optimized human.
Each Masterclass video is in HD quality and looks just as good on your living room TV as on your phone. In combination with Evernote, you have an entire university with a faculty staff better than Harvard and a notetaking system better than Cornell.
If you’re entertained, you are the product
If you’re watching shows made to entertain, you are the product. You are being used while someone else makes money off of the time you will never get back.
Watching Netflix is paying a corporation to keep you from becoming the greatest version of yourself or progressing through your life and duty as a man.
If you watch Masterclass, you’re paying to learn from individuals who are near-impossible to reach.
It sounds extreme and wrong to say that Masterclass is for everyone, but it’s hard to argue against the value and opportunity Masterclass presents.
for $180, everyone can afford Masterclass and it’s a shame if you don’t get it. Below are all of the classes Masterclass offers and a short description of the course.
While looking through the list, pay attention to the dramatic caliber of outliers Masterclass managed to secure. They have content you can’t find anywhere else.
